Spellbook banned? May I ask what brought this on, if there's a glitch or something?

Probably to prevent any possible exploits related to spells. It's a catch-all thing since spellbooks really don't matter to anyone.

Mm, fair enough. Thanks.

I wonder if there is some confusion about what the Spellbooks do.

The Spellbooks only work if they pick up magic spells on the server. Competitive gameplay can be affected by Halloween spells not magic spells. Halloween spells have nothing to do with the Spellbook and can be attached to weapons, cosmetics, and classes. The Halloween spells will stay with what they are attached to until the Halloween event is over, unless (I believe) the server commands disable it.

Unless there is some glitch I'm not aware of, all banning of the Spellbook accomplished was forcing a bunch of people to update their whitelists. On the plus side, though, it looks like some of the more recent cosmetics were whitelisted, so that's good.

I've played on servers with the Spellbook banned (I updated and double checked the whitelist myself), and we could still use spells in the pregame with the right cvars. It seems like the whitelist has no effect on the Spellbook after all. I'm pretty confused.

On the subject of cosmetics, I think a few of the more obnoxious cosmetics (the big ones that make the hitbox hard to discern) should have been banned, but the Dadliest Catch more than makes up for it :)

(Also shoutout to Valve for using "spells" to refer to two different things.)

Oh, right, the spellbook magazine has been updated to be a stock action item when Halloween spells are enabled. You literally can't prevent people from using Halloween spells by banning items. You need to have settings that prevent spell spawns, period (does forced_holiday 0 not do that?) I should have remembered and now I'm confused again.

Remember "rampup" for the time-based Heavy damage change?
